Bawdsey Manor Estate on the Suffolk Heritage Coast is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is a diverse environment comprising 150 acres of beach, cliff, marsh, woodland, meadow, registered Historic Parkland and formal gardens, at present The Lost Gardens of Bawdsey Manor. The formal Gardens were laid out in the 1890's. They include 100 metres of artificial cliff faced with Pulhamite and laid out as a rockery with grottoes, seats and flowerbeds, a secret garden in the site of Martello Tower V leading to the Italian Garden and a 4-acre walled garden that continues to provide fresh vegetables, fruit and flowers for the House. Above the river Jordan is the RAF Memorial
Grove. Below the house are the formal South terraces and stairway designed
and laid out by the architect William Eade. |
